Canoochee Revisted (Jesus Man)
I was born in a small town in South Georgia, moved to a large city when I was about four.
My big brother Billy Joe and mama and papa, we all joined the big church except Papa.
He'd always go back down the country to the little country churches he'd always gone to. Canoochee and Hebron, and Rosemary and Longcreek. Bein his baby boy, I'd always go with him... and I learned to love it really. I was about 12 or 13 at the period that I'm thinking about now and uh, I'm sure my reasons for going weren't always what they should be
I hope to see Kay Simmons there
And sittin next to her any chance I can (yeah...ooooh)
We'd be sittin in the back pew holdin' hands
Hardly payin attention to the preachin about the Jesus Man
(hey, talkin bout the Jesus man, hey, talking bout the Jesus man)
Everybody had to bring food to these little churches. Cause the services lasted from morning to dark. And somebody'd always bring a little bar b que and deviled eggsand ...ham biscuits and sausage biscuit. My mama always made us a big clay crock full of baked beans and smoked bacon. And we'd gather at someone's house, whoever had plenty of room and after the services we'd tell stories and usually make some music
Old dark Henry played the five string banjo
And man he'd pick it like a three piece bluegrass band
We' be hanging off the long porch, clappin hands
Picking and a singing to the Jesus man
The heat in the little churches was always provided by an old pot belly stove sittin' on a two by two steel rug. Somebody would stoke it during the service without you ever even knowin' it. Air conditionin' was a paper fan in your hand with the name of the local mortician printed on the back. There was no musical accompaniment at all
Mama sang the melody, papa sang bass
I'd do the harmony to amazing grace
Billy Joe would do the best he can
Singing hallelujah to the Jesus man
Mmm, hmmm
Rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham (Rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham)
Rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham (Rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham)
Rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham
Knowin, Lord Knowin
Lord, lord rock my soul
